About Me:
I am a native New Englander thriving on the shores of the Pacific... existing outside of the frayed and frivolous... filled with vivacity and verve... inspired to create my art in words, now that I'm tapped into the beauty that flows out of me. I wish to always live with intelligence, grace, sensual light and unweathered enthusiasm. I hope to find special people who will offer me insights on how to expose one's literary passion in unique fashion and with profound effect.

The Dare

There come times when you know ‘ the moment is now’. It’s hard to explain that particular insight beyond the fact that it’s abundantly clear that all possibilities have aligned to this reasoned conclusion. I can no longer rationalize the interferences, nor explain away the often unconventional rearrangements of my life. There is no financial blame or bruised heart cop-out. I cannot impugn a lover or point a finger at my childhood. No charges can be leveled at a boss, and I’m unable to condemn a landlord. There is a door open and I’m without a single convincing justification as to why I should, again, close it. There is just one tiny barrier that I must contend with. This astounding fear, thorough uncertainty… a paralyzing belief that I’m merely fooling myself to believe the artist in me is of any interest to others in this world. As though heralded on the front page of the NY Times… news worthy, it is not. The bare and canonic question is this- do I dare express my art with unfettered passion and eager pursuit? Do I challenge the misgivings and leap into what I long to explore? The intensity of this moment is overwhelming. What side wins? Which part of my persona emerges? Shall I go through that door, or decide the obstacles are, still, too great? Failure to grasp this unique moment will cause a coward in me to dance gaily in celebration of yet another successful abort of my imagination. The moment is now. The door is open. Do I dare? I’ll pour another glass of merlot and tell you in the morning.

Anna;
I am new to this site and just poking around to see who's here and what they say. I loved your open and honest assessment of the fear that grips so many of us in "The Dare" - i can completely relate. I have years of journals filled with the same question, and am trying to re-train my brain to get past the miriad of excuses I give, that you so eloquently exposed. Thanks for the push. -tst-

Hello again Anna. Quick question for you. What kind of writing are you doing and would you consider sharing a sample or two? I know we've bantered back and forth about this for a bit but I'd like to get a little more serious here. Cup of coffee or something? I could use some outside perspective.

Thanks for the note, Anna! All that traveling sounds like a lot of fun. I really like The Dare -- great style. In response to the question, "Do I dare?," I would say: "Just write." I'll look forward to reading more of your writings...

Hi Anna,

Thanks for your reply. I just got back in town myself. What kind of writing do you do? I'm currently teaching a screenwriting class at Southwestern College along with a few other film production courses. I don't know if you would be the writing partner I'm looking for either, however, but I'm sure open to finding out.

Absolutely. I work at the airport in Carlsbad so I'm within easy reach. I'm currently without a coherent project of my own, but I am helping another writer with his project and writing lyrics for a musician friend of mine. I think I may be operating more as an editor at the moment. If you'd like to schedule an appointment, I'm more readily reached at jnpaddock@gmail.com. Let me know.

Hi Anna,
Wow. I'd completely forgotten about this site. As you may have noticed, I don't have a whole lot of commentary on my page. I'm actually up in Carlsbad as well now (not North Park as is posted). My writing comes and goes in fits and starts but I'm trying to be a little more persistant. I'm always open for sharing and criticism so please feel free to send something my way and I'll try to drum up something to return. Look forward to hearing from you.

Welcome San Diego Writers!

Grab a cup of coffee, pull up a chair and stay awhile. Let's talk about writing.

Keep a few things in mind as you post here:

1. Posts are public.
This is a public forum and all posts are archived on the web. Bottom line, don't say anything here you wouldn't want everyone (and I mean EVERYONE: your mom, your little brother, your future employer) to see. Forever.

2. Be On Topic.
This is a group of writers. We're here to talk about writing, the creation of writing, the business of writing, events about writing. We are also a community of friends to some extent, which means that on occasion, non-writing topics will come up. Use the Start a New Discussion link if you want to change topics, and be sure to Title and Tag your post appropriately. That way your fellow writers will be able to scan the list of active discussions and see which ones are of interest.

3. Be Respectful.
Don't really foresee a problem here, but we gotta say it anyway. Disagreements are fine, but please please don't resort to personal insults and/or name calling. Mean people are not cool and harassment, intentionally inflammatory remarks, and bigotry will not be tolerated.

4. Privacy.
We'll respect yours. We won't give away or sell names, contact information, etc. Please do the same for your fellow community members.

5. SPAM. Don't.

6. Ads.
Part of the deal with using this wonderful, free online tool (ning.com) is that it has Ads running along the side. We can upgrade to a professional account, but it will cost $20 per month, so if it bothers you, be prepared to pony up.
