I used to go to this little place called the Secret Cafe in FL. First time writers and poets would share their work, support and critique each other in a fun and friendly environment. Welcome to that place online. My Secret Cafe. Grab a cup!

Blurbs

Blurbs, or quotes, are something I didn't know about a month ago. These are given by other authors who read a precopy of your book and, if they enjoy it, give you a quote to put on the book jacket. That way, if their fans see that their favorite author loved your book, they might be inclined to pick it up.

If you know authors (or even personalities, if applicable) then you can ask them yourself; or your agent and editor or friends can help you out. Sometimes you have to write a letter to go alo… Continue

Book Pub Date Summer 2010

My books edits are done, I've gotten paid for it being accepted, and now plans are afoot.

The pub date is Summer 2010. I'm not sure which month that means, but I do know that wheels are a-turning. Blurbs are being gotten from other authors, covers are being designed, and the first launch meeting was held this week.

I Feel So Special

My editor at Putnam just left a comment on my blog, then told me she NEVER leaves comments on authors' blogs. I feel so special! I feel like a celebrity left a comment or something, because I suppose she sort of is to me. Ahhh. Now if I could just get her to approve my final edits I'll be set.

The never-ending edits

Publishing moves slooooowly. And although my first agent once told me that "editors don't edit anymore," mine does. Does a damn good job of it, too. She's exacting. She is like the most strict literature professor in the world. You think your critique group kicks your butt? Wait until my editor sends you a 7 page letter and a marked-up manuscript, mincing no words or time in telling you exactly why you're wrong. And you realize you're wrong, once you've gulped and taken it in.

Nothing escapes h… Continue

I finally got my editing letter, all 11 pages of it. Luckily, the editor is brilliant, so I am actually excited to be working. I lined up childcare (people are so much more helpful when you've got a book contract in hand) and am planning on 6-7 hour days.

Ha. I have spent the summer waiting for edits, and my editor (along with all my other freelance stuff) is behind. She just told me she's going to give me an editorial letter...as opposed to line edits...so I can work on the big concepts of the book.

I'm kind of amazed they bought the book at all, since they want so much done to it, but I'm grateful.

Hi Mod,

I wasn't sure if you couldn't find us for the workshop or you couldn't attend. I wanted to let you know if you still wanted to participate in the central writers workshop group, we're meeting again on August 20th. If you send me your email (jessica_hilt@yahoo.com), I will get you material to read for the 20th meeting and pass around your material.

Let me know!

About

JeSais JeSais created this Ning Network.

Welcome San Diego Writers!

Grab a cup of coffee, pull up a chair and stay awhile. Let's talk about writing.

Keep a few things in mind as you post here:

1. Posts are public.
This is a public forum and all posts are archived on the web. Bottom line, don't say anything here you wouldn't want everyone (and I mean EVERYONE: your mom, your little brother, your future employer) to see. Forever.

2. Be On Topic.
This is a group of writers. We're here to talk about writing, the creation of writing, the business of writing, events about writing. We are also a community of friends to some extent, which means that on occasion, non-writing topics will come up. Use the Start a New Discussion link if you want to change topics, and be sure to Title and Tag your post appropriately. That way your fellow writers will be able to scan the list of active discussions and see which ones are of interest.

3. Be Respectful.
Don't really foresee a problem here, but we gotta say it anyway. Disagreements are fine, but please please don't resort to personal insults and/or name calling. Mean people are not cool and harassment, intentionally inflammatory remarks, and bigotry will not be tolerated.

4. Privacy.
We'll respect yours. We won't give away or sell names, contact information, etc. Please do the same for your fellow community members.

5. SPAM. Don't.

6. Ads.
Part of the deal with using this wonderful, free online tool (ning.com) is that it has Ads running along the side. We can upgrade to a professional account, but it will cost $20 per month, so if it bothers you, be prepared to pony up.
